Editorial Policy
How PawNamer researches, reviews and corrects its name lists, and the standards every entry has to meet before publication.
This page sets out how we work: what we look at before publishing, how often we revisit it, and what happens when something turns out to be wrong. It applies to every name list and guide on PawNamer.
It describes our process. It is not a warranty of accuracy, and nothing here should be read as professional advice.
PawNamer is operated by Ngoc Vietsmall, Cau Giay, Hanoi, Vietnam. Content is published under a team byline because lists are compiled and reviewed collectively.
What every entry must have
We aim to publish no name without two things: an etymological meaning and a language of origin. A list of names without meanings is what every other site already publishes; the meanings are the reason this site exists.
These are drawn from reference works rather than original scholarship. Where a reference is disputed or a name is a modern coinage with no older root, the entry says so rather than inventing one.
Where a name has competing origins, the entry says so rather than silently picking one. Where an origin is genuinely unknown — common with modern coinages — the entry says "origin unclear". We treat an honest gap as more useful than a confident guess.
Sources we use
- Etymology: published etymological dictionaries and established name references.
- Popularity: public pet licensing records released by city open-data programmes. These are actual registrations, not search volume.
- Usage notes: guidance commonly taught in basic obedience training, cited as such rather than presented as our own research.
Sources we do not use
We do not take meanings from other pet name sites. Copying another site's gloss means inheriting its errors. If you find an entry here that matches another site word for word, that is a mistake — please tell us.
Review schedule
Name popularity shifts every year and occasionally better scholarship appears on an origin. Lists go through a rolling quarterly review. The date on each page is the real date that page was last examined, not a template value that updates itself. We do not refresh dates to look current.
Corrections
When something turns out to be wrong we update the page and note what changed. Substantive corrections — a disputed meaning, a revised origin — are noted visibly rather than edited silently. Typos and formatting are fixed without a note.
If you spot an error, contact us. We credit people who catch mistakes unless they ask us not to.
Our limits
We are a naming resource run by a small editorial team. We are not veterinarians, trainers, linguists or lawyers, and we do not publish advice on health, diet, breeding or behaviour.
Everything here is general information for interest and inspiration. It is not professional advice and should not be relied on as the sole basis for any decision. Meanings are not offered as linguistic authority — if you are naming a pet after a word in a language you do not speak, a second opinion from a native speaker is worth having.
For any question touching your animal's health, diet or behaviour, consult a licensed veterinarian or qualified behaviourist who can examine the animal.
Limitation of liability
We take reasonable care, but we do not warrant that content on this site is accurate, complete or current. Etymology is an area of ongoing scholarly disagreement and published references frequently differ from one another.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Ngoc Vietsmall and its contributors accept no liability for any direct, indirect or consequential loss arising from use of, or reliance on, anything published here. Readers use the site at their own discretion.
Nothing on this site creates a professional relationship of any kind, and nothing here substitutes for advice from a licensed veterinarian, qualified trainer or other appropriate professional.
Advertising and independence
Advertising and affiliate links never affect which names appear, in what order, or what we say about them. Advertisers have no input into editorial content and do not see it before publication. See our affiliate disclosure.
